Cherry Barb Tank Mates

Because cherry barbs are genuinely shy and easily outcompeted, tankmate selection here is less about avoiding aggression toward others and more about avoiding a bolder fish overwhelming or intimidating the cherry barbs themselves.

Generally Compatible

Harlequin rasboras share a similarly calm temperament and comparable size, making for a low-stress community pairing where neither species dominates the other. Corydoras catfish occupy a different tank region and their peaceful, unobtrusive nature suits a cherry barb community well. Otocinclus catfish and other quiet algae-eating species round out a calm community tank without adding competitive pressure. Kuhli loaches, similarly retiring bottom dwellers, coexist easily.

Proceed With Caution

Zebra danios, while not aggressive, are considerably bolder and faster at feeding time, and can leave cherry barbs undernourished if not fed carefully across multiple spots. Black skirt tetras share some fin-nipping tendency and enough boldness to occasionally intimidate a shier cherry barb, so monitor interactions closely.

Generally Incompatible

Tiger barbs, despite the superficial similarity in name and appearance, are a poor match: their boldness and occasional fin-nipping tendency will consistently outcompete and stress a shier cherry barb. Larger or more aggressive cichlids are an obvious mismatch given the cherry barb's small size and retiring nature.

Compatibility Summary

The most dependable cherry barb tankmates are other calm, similarly sized, non-competitive fish; avoid bold, fast-feeding, or nippy species regardless of their own peaceful reputation on paper.
