Planted-tank friendly
The biggest misconception about cherry barb care is treating it identically to its bolder relative the tiger barb just because they share a similar body shape and price point. This is a genuinely shy fish, and its care revolves around making it feel secure rather than simply stocking enough of them.
Tank Size and Setup
A 20-gallon tank suits a group of six or more comfortably. Dense planting, floating plants for surface shade, and a dark substrate all help a cherry barb feel secure enough to stay out in the open and display its color, rather than retreating constantly in a stark, brightly lit setup.
Lighting
Subdued or moderate lighting suits this species considerably better than the bright lighting some planted tanks favor for demanding aquatic plants; if strong lighting is needed for plant growth, floating plants or shaded zones give cherry barbs somewhere to retreat without hiding constantly.
Water Parameters and Early Warning Signs
While the tolerated range (pH 6.0-7.0, temperature 73-81°F) is fairly wide, cherry barbs show visible stress from ammonia or nitrite considerably faster than many other beginner fish: watch for color fading or clamped fins as an early signal to test water quality before other symptoms develop.
Diet and Feeding Competition
Cherry barbs are omnivores that do fine on a quality flake or small pellet, supplemented with occasional live or frozen foods. Because this species is easily outcompeted by bolder tankmates, feed in multiple spots and watch that every individual gets a fair share rather than assuming a single feeding point works as well as it would for a more assertive species.
Breeding Coloration
Males develop their most vivid red coloration during courtship displays; a male that suddenly shows less red outside of any obvious water quality problem may simply not currently be displaying, rather than being unwell.
