Zebra Danio Tank Mates

Because zebra danios are fast, active, and have a genuine fin-nipping tendency toward slower tankmates, stocking decisions should weigh swimming speed and fin length alongside the usual temperament considerations.

Generally Compatible

Other fast-swimming, similarly sized schooling fish like white cloud mountain minnows and harlequin rasboras match both the activity level and speed of zebra danios well, reducing any nipping tendency since neither species presents as an easy slow target. Corydoras catfish and bristlenose plecos occupy a different water column level entirely and aren't targeted by danio activity above them. Bigger, robust barbs can hold their own against occasional nipping attempts without being harmed.

Proceed With Caution

Bettas and fancy guppies, both slower-swimming, long-finned fish, are frequently cited as vulnerable to zebra danio fin-nipping, though a well-sized danio group (six or more) in adequate space reduces this considerably; a smaller group or cramped tank raises real risk for this pairing. Dwarf shrimp can coexist with adult danios, though shrimp fry face some predation risk from an opportunistic, fast-swimming fish.

Generally Incompatible

Very slow-moving or heavily finned fancy fish (elaborate fancy goldfish varieties, for instance) combine slow speed with an enticing fin target, a combination this species' nipping tendency targets most reliably. Extremely small, delicate fry-stage fish of other species are vulnerable to a zebra danio's fast, opportunistic feeding style.

Compatibility Summary

Zebra danios do best with similarly fast, robust tankmates; slower, long-finned fish carry real fin-nipping risk unless the danio group is kept at an adequate size in ample swimming space.

Compatibility Table

SpeciesRatingNote
White Cloud Mountain MinnowCompatibleMatched speed and activity level; shares cold-tolerant care needs.
Harlequin RasboraCompatibleSimilar size and swimming speed; not an easy nipping target.
Corydoras CatfishCompatibleDifferent water column level; unaffected by danio activity above.
Cherry ShrimpCautionAdults usually safe, but fry face predation risk from this fast, opportunistic fish.
Betta FishCautionSlow, long-finned profile is a common fin-nipping target; safer with a large, well-sized danio group.
GoldfishNot compatibleFancy long-finned goldfish varieties combine slow speed with an enticing fin target for nipping.
