Tiger Barb Tank Mates

Tiger barb tankmate selection comes down to one central question: can this fish keep pace with an active, occasionally nippy shoal without having fins that invite trouble? Getting the tiger barb group size right (six or more) reduces but doesn't eliminate this consideration.

Generally Compatible

Zebra danios, similarly fast and active with short fins, make one of the most reliable tiger barb tankmates, matching both energy level and resilience to occasional nipping attempts. Corydoras catfish occupy a different part of the tank and their short fins and armored bodies make them a safe bottom-dwelling companion. Bristlenose plecos are similarly unbothered by tiger barb activity given their armor and bottom-dwelling habits. Rainbow sharks and similar robust bottom or mid-level fish can generally hold their own against tiger barb energy.

Proceed With Caution

Other barb species can work but may compete for the same social role within a mixed shoal, occasionally leading to confused pecking-order dynamics; success varies by individual tank. Larger, robust tetras like black skirt tetras can coexist but both species have some fin-nipping tendency, so double-nipping risk should be monitored.

Generally Incompatible

Bettas, with their large flowing fins and slower swimming style, are a classic poor match for tiger barbs and one of the most commonly reported fin-nipping victim pairings in the hobby. Angelfish and other long-finned, slow-moving fish face the same risk, especially as juveniles before they're large enough to defend themselves. Guppies and other fancy-finned livebearers are similarly vulnerable to nipping.

Compatibility Summary

The most dependable tiger barb tankmates are other fast, short-finned, similarly robust fish; avoid long-finned, slow-moving species regardless of how well-stocked the tiger barb shoal is.
