Neon Tetra Tank Mates
Neon tetra compatibility is shaped primarily by size — being a small, peaceful schooling fish, they're vulnerable to predation from larger fish and stressed by boisterous, fast tankmates, even ones that aren't technically aggressive.
Generally Compatible
Cory catfish are a classic, excellent pairing — peaceful, bottom-dwelling, and entirely non-competitive with neons' mid-water schooling activity. Kuhli loaches similarly occupy the bottom level with minimal interaction. Cherry shrimp and nerite/mystery snails add cleanup crew value without any behavioral conflict, though very small shrimp fry can occasionally be eaten by an opportunistic neon. Harlequin rasboras and ember tetras are similarly sized, similarly peaceful schooling fish that can share a tank well, sometimes even schooling loosely together. Dwarf gouramis, kept singly, are generally calm enough not to bother a neon school, though individual temperament varies.
Proceed With Caution
Bettas can work in a large enough tank (20+ gallons) with a calm individual, but some bettas will hunt small, fast-moving schooling fish, so this pairing carries real individual-dependent risk. Larger barbs or tetras that are otherwise peaceful can sometimes still outcompete neons for food simply through size and speed difference, worth monitoring at feeding time.
Generally Incompatible
Angelfish, especially as they mature, are a classic mismatch — angelfish are natural predators of small fish in the wild and a fully grown angelfish will often eat neon tetras given the opportunity, despite angelfish being labeled 'peaceful' in a general community-fish sense. Oscars and other large cichlids will simply eat neons outright. Tiger barbs and other fin-nippers stress and physically damage small tetras. Any fish large enough to fit a neon in its mouth should be considered a predation risk regardless of its general reputation for calm temperament.
Compatibility Summary
The safest rule of thumb for neon tetra tankmates: choose species of similar or smaller size, similarly peaceful temperament, and ideally similar water chemistry preference (soft, slightly acidic to neutral). Avoid anything with a mouth large enough to eat a neon, regardless of how that species is generally described.
