Honey Gourami Tank Mates

Because the honey gourami is genuinely shy and non-competitive rather than territorial like its dwarf gourami relative, tankmate selection here is mostly about avoiding boisterous, fast, or overly assertive fish that could intimidate it into permanent hiding rather than worrying about the gourami being the aggressor.

Generally Compatible

Cherry shrimp and nerite snails make excellent tankmates, since a honey gourami's small mouth and gentle temperament pose little threat and the pairing shares similar soft-water preferences. Kuhli loaches, being nocturnal bottom-dwellers, coexist peacefully without competing for the same space or attention. Harlequin rasboras and other small, calm schooling fish share the honey gourami's soft-water, peaceful-community niche well. Corydoras catfish occupy a different tank level and add calm bottom activity without pressuring the gourami.

Proceed With Caution

A second honey gourami, particularly two males, can work in a well-planted tank with enough cover, though watching for one fish being consistently more hidden than the other is worth doing since even this generally peaceful species retains some mild hierarchy. Dwarf gouramis sharing a tank can sometimes intimidate a honey gourami given the larger species' more assertive temperament, even without direct aggression. Betta fish can occasionally view a honey gourami as competition given the shared labyrinth-fish body plan, though outcomes vary by individual temperament.

Generally Incompatible

Tiger barbs and other fast, nippy fish will readily outcompete a shy honey gourami for food and can nip at its fins, driving it into permanent hiding. Large or boisterous cichlids overwhelm this small, gentle species entirely and are a poor match regardless of water chemistry overlap.

Compatibility Summary

Calm, similarly-paced community fish and peaceful invertebrates make the most reliable honey gourami tankmates; anything fast, nippy, or highly assertive will simply out-muscle this shy species for resources and confidence.
