Guppy Tank Mates

Guppy compatibility is generally favorable given their peaceful temperament, but two considerations shape the real-world decision beyond simple aggression: whether a tankmate will eat guppy fry (relevant if breeding is wanted) and whether a tankmate might nip at the male's showy tail (relevant for maintaining that tail's condition and the fish's overall welfare).

Generally Compatible

Cory catfish are an excellent match — peaceful, bottom-dwelling, and entirely unbothered by guppies' mid-water activity. Nerite and mystery snails add algae control without any behavioral conflict. Platies and mollies, close livebearer relatives with similar water and temperament needs, mix well and are a very common combination, though cross-species hybridization is generally not a concern between these different genera (guppies won't hybridize with platies or mollies). Harlequin rasboras and other small, peaceful schooling tetras work well given matched size and temperament, though most small fish will opportunistically eat guppy fry, worth noting if breeding is a goal. Kuhli loaches stay low and out of the way, adding bottom-level activity with no interaction conflict.

Proceed With Caution

Bettas can sometimes work with guppies but the pairing has a mixed track record — a betta may mistake a colorful male guppy's flowing tail for a rival or simply nip at it, and this varies significantly by individual betta temperament. Angelfish, as adults, are known to eat small livebearer fry and sometimes adult guppies if size-mismatched, so this pairing works better once guppies are a similar size to the angelfish or in a large, well-planted tank offering fry cover. Larger, boisterous cichlids generally aren't a good match given the size and temperament difference.

Generally Incompatible

Tiger barbs and other known fin-nippers will target a male guppy's flowing tail specifically, since it's an easy, visible target. Large predatory fish (oscars and similar) will simply eat guppies outright given the size difference. Aggressive cichlids generally stress and harass smaller, more peaceful livebearers.

Compatibility Summary

Guppies pair most reliably with other small, peaceful community fish and bottom-dwellers of similar temperament. If preserving fry for breeding purposes is a goal, minimize tankmates known to actively hunt small fry and provide dense plant cover regardless of tankmate choice.
