Ember Tetra Tank Mates
Because ember tetras are so small and feed cautiously, tankmate selection has to weigh size and feeding speed as heavily as temperament, a consideration that matters less for larger, more assertive tetra species.
Generally Compatible
Celestial pearl danios share a similarly small size, soft-water preference, and calm feeding behavior, making this one of the most naturally matched nano pairings available. Chili rasboras and other truly small rasboras share size and water chemistry needs closely. Cherry shrimp and other dwarf shrimp coexist peacefully, being neither a threat to nor threatened by an ember tetra's tiny size. Otocinclus catfish occupy a different tank level and diet niche entirely, adding no competitive pressure.
Proceed With Caution
Neon or cardinal tetras share a soft-water preference but are noticeably larger and faster at feeding time, meaning embers can be outcompeted for food in a mixed shoal situation even without any direct aggression; this pairing works better with multiple feeding spots. Honey gouramis are generally peaceful but large enough to intimidate an ember tetra if kept in a smaller tank.
Generally Incompatible
Larger, boisterous tetras like black skirt tetras or tiger barbs will simply outcompete and potentially stress a shoal of embers even without overt aggression, since the size and speed mismatch is significant. Any known fin-nipper poses a disproportionate risk to a fish this small and slow. Larger or predatory fish of almost any kind view an ember tetra as a plausible snack given its diminutive size.
Compatibility Summary
The deciding factor for ember tetra tankmates is size and feeding speed at least as much as temperament; even a nominally peaceful but large or fast-feeding species can functionally starve out a shoal of embers over time.

| Species | Rating | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Celestial Pearl Danio | Compatible | Similarly tiny, soft-water, calm feeder; a well-matched nano pairing. |
| Cherry Shrimp | Compatible | Neither a threat to nor threatened by an ember tetra's small size. |
| Otocinclus Catfish | Compatible | Different tank level and diet niche; no competitive pressure. |
| Neon Tetra | Caution | Shares soft-water preference but larger and faster-feeding; provide multiple feeding spots. |
| Honey Gourami | Caution | Generally peaceful but can intimidate embers in a smaller tank. |
| Black Skirt Tetra | Not compatible | Larger and faster-feeding; will outcompete a shoal of embers for food. |
| Tiger Barb | Not compatible | Boisterous and a known fin-nipper; disproportionate risk to a fish this small. |
