Clownfish Tank Mates
Clownfish are reef-safe and generally peaceful as juveniles, but tankmate selection needs to account for the territorial streak that emerges with maturity, particularly around a claimed anemone or rock structure, and for the fact that most other saltwater fish come with their own specific water chemistry and tankmate needs.
Generally Compatible
Other clownfish purchased together as a bonded pair or small group of mismatched sizes (to respect the species' size-based hierarchy) are the most reliable clownfish tankmate: introducing same-sized, unrelated clownfish later is a common trigger for serious aggression. Firefish gobies and other peaceful, differently-shaped reef fish that don't compete directly for the same territory generally coexist well. Cleaner shrimp and other reef-safe invertebrates are typically unbothered by clownfish and add useful reef-tank cleanup behavior.
Proceed With Caution
Other damselfish, close relatives of clownfish, can trigger territorial conflict since they occupy a similar ecological niche and temperament bracket; success depends heavily on tank size and order of introduction. Dwarf angelfish can work in a large enough reef tank but may compete for the same rockwork territory a clownfish has claimed.
Generally Incompatible
A second, unrelated clownfish of similar size added later is one of the more reliably bad marine tankmate decisions, given how aggressively an established fish will defend territory against a same-sized rival. Large, predatory marine fish (lionfish, larger groupers, etc.) may view an adult clownfish as prey depending on relative size, and are a poor match regardless of clownfish's own hardiness.
Compatibility Summary
The most dependable clownfish tankmates are other clownfish purchased together as an established group, plus peaceful reef fish and invertebrates that don't compete for the same territory; avoid introducing unrelated similarly-sized clownfish or aggressive same-niche species later.
