Cherry Shrimp Tank Mates

The central consideration in stocking a cherry shrimp tank is predation risk, since shrimp and especially shrimp fry are a natural food source for many community fish regardless of that fish's general peaceful reputation.

Generally Compatible

Nerite snails and mystery snails share peaceful, algae-grazing habits with no predation risk in either direction, making this one of the most reliable invertebrate combinations available. Otocinclus catfish graze algae without competing directly for the same food sources shrimp prioritize and pose no threat to shrimp. Small, peaceful nano fish like celestial pearl danios can coexist with adult shrimp in a well-planted tank with enough hiding cover, though shrimp fry survival will be lower than in a fish-free tank.

Proceed With Caution

Small peaceful community fish like neon tetras or ember tetras generally leave adult shrimp alone but will eat shrimp fry opportunistically, meaning a colony can persist but won't grow as quickly as in a shrimp-only setup. Corydoras catfish and bristlenose plecos are usually safe for adult shrimp but may occasionally take fry given the opportunity.

Generally Incompatible

Bettas and other assertive, predatory-leaning fish will actively hunt and eat cherry shrimp, adult and fry alike, despite occasional anecdotal claims of peaceful coexistence; this pairing is a real risk rather than an exception-prone rule. Larger or predatory cichlids view shrimp as a natural food source outright. Assertive livebearers like mollies and swordtails in larger, hungrier individuals can also pick off shrimp opportunistically, though platies are generally somewhat safer given their smaller size and less predatory feeding style.

Compatibility Summary

A dedicated shrimp-only or shrimp-and-snail tank offers the best breeding success; any fish added introduces some degree of fry predation risk, even from species marketed as broadly peaceful.
