The single biggest mistake in cardinal tetra care is treating this species like a neon tetra with slightly better color: cardinals genuinely need softer, more acidic water than typical community tank guidance, and skipping this step is the most common reason keepers report gradual decline despite seemingly fine ammonia and nitrite readings.

Tank Size and Group

A 20-gallon tank suits a starting group of ten or more cardinal tetras, and this species shows its best coloration and lowest stress in genuinely large groups, arguably more strongly than many other small tetras.

Water Chemistry

Target pH 4.6-6.5 and general hardness 1-8 dGH, genuinely softer and more acidic than standard community tank guidance and considerably more demanding than a neon tetra's tolerance. If local tap water runs hard, using RO (reverse osmosis) water remineralized to a low target hardness, or blending RO with tap water, is a more reliable path to appropriate water than simply adding tap water conditioner alone. Driftwood and leaf litter release tannins that naturally soften and acidify water over time, supporting the target range while also replicating the species' natural blackwater habitat.

74-82°F suits cardinal tetras well, on the warmer side of typical community tank ranges, reflecting the consistently warm tropical waters of their native range.

Diet

A high-quality small flake or micro-pellet as a staple, supplemented with occasional live or frozen food (baby brine shrimp, daphnia, micro-worms), suits cardinal tetra nutritional needs well.

Distinguishing From Neon Tetras at Purchase

Check whether the red stripe runs the full body length (cardinal) or only the rear half (neon) before purchase, since misidentification at the store is a common source of later water-chemistry mismatch problems.

Quarantine Given Wild-Caught Origins

Because a significant share of cardinal tetras sold are wild-caught, a longer, more careful quarantine period (3-4 weeks) is a genuinely worthwhile precaution against introduced parasites or disease compared to a typically captive-bred community fish.
