Black Skirt Tetra Tank Mates

Tankmate selection for black skirt tetras is dominated by one behavioral fact: this species nips fins, especially in undersized groups, and that risk should be weighed more heavily than water chemistry compatibility, which this hardy fish rarely struggles with.

Generally Compatible

Corydoras catfish occupy the bottom level, have short fins that offer little nipping temptation, and share a tolerance for the same wide water parameter range, making this one of the more dependable pairings available. Zebra danios and giant danios are fast, short-finned, and hold their own against occasional nipping, making them a resilient choice. Bristlenose plecos are armored, bottom-dwelling, and simply not a practical nipping target. Larger barbs like tiger barbs share a similar boisterous temperament and rarely end up singled out the way slower fish do.

Proceed With Caution

Other tetra species like neons or cardinals can work in a large, well-planted tank where the black skirts are kept in a full group of six or more and well fed, but the size and fin-nipping risk should be monitored, especially early after introduction. Dwarf gouramis have moderate fin length and generally tolerate black skirts, but should be watched during initial introduction.

Generally Incompatible

Bettas are the classic bad pairing: long, slow-moving fins are an obvious nipping target, and this combination accounts for a large share of reported fin damage across fishkeeping forums. Fancy long-finned guppies and angelfish, particularly as juveniles with developing fins, face the same risk. Very small or fragile fish like ember tetras or dwarf shrimp can be intimidated or outcompeted by the more boisterous black skirt tetra's feeding behavior even without direct aggression.

Compatibility Summary

The deciding factor for any black skirt tetra pairing is fin length and swimming speed of the other species, not water chemistry, since this tetra's hardiness makes chemistry compatibility almost a non-issue by comparison.
