Otocinclus Catfish Tank Mates

Otocinclus are about as peaceful as freshwater fish get, so aggression is rarely the deciding factor in tankmate selection. The real question is competition: whether a given tankmate leaves enough food, and enough calm space to graze, for a slow, unassertive fish that's often still recovering from shipping stress.

Generally Compatible

Small, peaceful tetras such as neon tetras, ember tetras, or rasboras occupy the middle water column and don't compete with otos for algae or bottom-level food. Corydoras catfish share the bottom but forage differently, hunting in substrate rather than grazing surfaces, so direct competition is minimal. Dwarf shrimp like cherry or amano shrimp are excellent tankmates and, in the case of amano shrimp, actively complement the oto's algae-grazing role rather than competing against it. Peaceful livebearers like guppies or platies in modest numbers generally coexist without issue.

Proceed With Caution

Larger or more boisterous algae eaters, including some plecos, can outcompete a group of otos for the same limited algae and biofilm supply in a smaller tank, effectively starving out the smaller, slower fish over time even without any direct aggression. Fast, food-competitive schooling fish kept in large numbers can consume sinking supplemental food, like algae wafers or blanched vegetables, before the otos reach it, making deliberate target-feeding more important in a busy community tank.

Generally Incompatible

Any predatory or even mildly aggressive fish large enough to view a two-inch fish as prey, including most cichlids beyond the smallest dwarf species, poses a genuine risk; otos have no real defense beyond hiding. Fin nippers such as tiger barbs can harass otos' small fins even without intending serious harm, adding stress to a fish that's frequently already running on thin reserves.

Compatibility Summary

The safest otocinclus tankmates are calm, small-to-modest community fish that don't compete directly for algae or supplemental food and pose no predation risk; the main practical concern isn't aggression but making sure this slow grazer actually gets fed.

Other Algae-Eating Species Sharing the Same Niche

Because otos rely so heavily on a limited, slowly regenerating algae and biofilm supply, stocking multiple algae-grazing species in the same tank, several oto groups plus a pleco plus snails, for example, can quietly starve out the smallest and most food-dependent of the group even when every species individually seems like a reasonable choice. It's worth thinking about total algae-grazing pressure in a tank rather than evaluating each grazing species in isolation.

Shrimp as Complementary Tankmates

Amano shrimp in particular pair well with otos because the two species graze somewhat different surfaces and particle sizes, amano shrimp handle larger debris and filamentous algae that otos rasp less efficiently, and neither competes meaningfully with the other for the soft biofilm otos specifically target. Cherry shrimp add another layer of general tank cleanup without meaningfully drawing down the food supply otos depend on.

Snails and Substrate-Level Competition

Nerite and mystery snails are broadly compatible with otos and pose no aggression risk, though a large snail population in a smaller tank can meaningfully reduce the available algae film, the same total-grazing-pressure consideration that applies to multiple fish species also applies here.

Introducing Otos to an Existing Community

Because newly purchased otos are so often already stressed from shipping, adding them to a calm, already-peaceful, well-fed community tank tends to go better than adding them to a tank with any existing feeding competition or territorial tension, since the oto has essentially no reserve capacity to handle additional stress during its first few weeks. Quarantining new otos for two to four weeks before introduction is good general practice, though it's worth balancing against the fact that a bare quarantine tank offers this species no algae to graze, so a heavily planted or otherwise mature quarantine setup, or a shortened quarantine period with very close observation, is a reasonable adjustment specific to this species.

Plants That Support Otocinclus Well

Broad-leaved, slower-growing plants like Anubias, java fern, and amazon sword tend to accumulate the soft biofilm and diatom layer otos favor more reliably than fast-growing stem plants that are constantly producing new, clean-surfaced growth. A tank stocked partly for this purpose, rather than purely for aesthetics, gives an oto group meaningfully more grazing surface than the same plant mass arranged for looks alone, and it's worth considering at the planning stage if otos are part of the intended long-term stocking rather than an afterthought addition.

Numbers and Total Bioload

Because individual otos are so small, a group of six to eight adds relatively little bioload to an established tank, so the limiting factor on group size is almost always available grazing surface and supplemental feeding capacity rather than filtration or tank volume. A larger, more heavily planted tank can reasonably support a bigger group than the six-fish minimum, provided feeding keeps pace with the additional fish.
