Mystery Snail Tank Mates

Mystery snails are peaceful, slow-moving, and generally easy to house, but their larger, more exposed soft body when active makes predation risk from certain fish a real consideration.

Generally Compatible

Cherry shrimp and nerite snails share peaceful, non-competitive habits with no meaningful risk in either direction. Peaceful community fish like platies, guppies, and most tetras coexist well and show no interest in a mystery snail's shell or body. Corydoras catfish and otocinclus catfish occupy a similar peaceful bottom or grazing niche without conflict.

Proceed With Caution

Larger, more curious fish occasionally nip at an extended snail foot or antennae out of curiosity rather than true predation, which can startle the snail into withdrawing repeatedly without causing serious harm in most cases, though repeated harassment is still a stress factor worth monitoring. Crayfish or larger, more predatory invertebrates can potentially damage or prey on a smaller or juvenile mystery snail.

Generally Incompatible

Assertive puffers, including dwarf puffers, are known specifically for cracking and eating snail shells as a natural part of their diet, making this one of the clearest genuinely incompatible pairings in the hobby. Larger, predatory cichlids and loaches known for snail-hunting (some botia species are specifically kept by other hobbyists to control unwanted snail populations) will actively target and kill mystery snails.

Compatibility Summary

Mystery snails fit well into almost any peaceful community tank; the clearest incompatibility is with fish specifically adapted or known to prey on snails, most notably puffers and dedicated snail-eating loach species.
